Finishing at the basket — footwork, touch, and game-speed attacks.

Coaching Cues
  • Eyes on rim

Go 1 minute on any drill — time yourself and see how many you make — or go for 10–20 makes.

  1. 1
Right Hand Layup – Right Block

Right block, right hand bank shot. No dribble, no movement. Land on 2 feet, hit the square — maybe a little in front of the block. Stay close to rim. 10–20 makes.

  1. 1
    Mikan Series – 3 Variations

Three versions: (1) Regular Mikan — right side, left side. (2) Reverse Mikan — right reverse, left reverse. (3) No Backboard — same pattern no glass. Step left, shoot it right-handed. Step right, shoot it left-handed. Go back and forth in rhythm. 5–20 makes each variation.

  2. 2
    Crab Dribble Layups

Shoot right, rebound, one hard dribble both hands simultaneously. Hop left, land two feet, shoot lefty. Then reverse. Combines coordination with footwork. Works both directions. 5–20 makes each side.

  3. 3
    X-Out Layups – 1 Foot & 2 Feet

Start on elbow, 1 dribble layup. Get the ball out of the net fast, dribble with your inside hand, touch the other elbow with your foot. Keep dribbling with that same hand — it's now your outside hand — and finish. Player choice: (1) Regular layup off 1 foot OR (2) Land and jump off 2 feet — right hand right side, left hand left side always OR (3) Inside hand finish off 1 foot. 30 sec to 2 min.

  4. 4
Around the Cone Layup Series – 5 Spots

5 cones at the 5 three-point spots. Dribble to cone, 1 dribble layup, move to next cone. Go hard for 30 seconds, 2–4 rounds. Count how many layups you make in 30 seconds and try to beat it each round.

  5. 5
Attack the Chair – Single Move

Chair or cone on the wing at the 3-point line, top of key, and other wing. 2 hard dribbles into a single move — hesitation, in and out, crossover, between the legs, behind the back, or spin — then 1 dribble layup. Make 10–20 layups at all 3 spots.

  6. 6
Triple Threat Layups – 5 Spots

Triple threat at 5 spots around the court. Pick a move — shot fake, jab and go, hip-to-hip rocker step, or crossover step — into a 1 dribble layup. Make 10 layups at each spot and switch up the triple threat move at each one. 50 total.

Coaching Cues
  • Game speed always

  • Attack with contact
  1. 1
    2 Ball Mikan – 3 Ways

Alternate finishes each elbow. 30 sec to 2 min.

  3. 3

Start baseline, pound twice, chair/cone in middle paint. 5. 5

Finishes: baby hook, euro step, low and high pick up, pro hop, inside hand finish, shot fake finish. 5 spots, different moves and finishes at each. Game speed decision making.

Chairs as screeners: (1) Wings — regular or step up ball screen on both wings (2) Middle — traditional or flat ball screen at the top. Read it 4 ways: use it, reject it, snake it (dribble at the screen like you're using it, then curl back the way you came instead of going through), or split it (attack the gap between the screener and your defender). Finishes: regular layup, baby hook, inside hand, same foot same hand, 2 feet, 2 feet shot fake step through, euro step, pro hop. Track makes.

You can also twist it (screener spins 180° and re-sets the screen facing the other way). Also use the ball screen, then attack a chair into a combo or triple move and score it. Finishes: regular layup, baby hook, inside hand, same foot same hand, 2 feet, 2 feet shot fake step through, euro step, pro hop. Track makes.

  6. 6

Work both wings and the middle of the floor. Every screen — down screen (curl), flare, pin down, wide pin down, and staggers (curl, straight cut, or reject) — plus: (1) Floppy — start under the rim with a chair on each block. Pick a side, sprint off that screen, catch and attack the rim. (2) Elevator Screens — two chairs side by side about a step apart. Sprint through the gap, catch and attack. (3) Screen & Pop — set a screen on a chair, pop out, catch and attack. Combo or triple move before the finish — mix it up. Partner calls the read so you react. Finishes: baby hook, reverse on the other side of the rim, euro step, low and high pick up, pro hop, inside hand finish, shot fake finish.

Floaters

Soft-touch finishing off the drive at every level.

Coaching Cues
  • Soft touch, high arc
  • One foot or two, stay balanced
  • Push it, don't shoot it

If you have a passer, just shoot the floater and back up to the same spot. Stay at each spot until you make 5, 10, 15, or 20 — whichever you decide — then move spots. Or go 1 minute on any drill — time yourself and see how many you make in a minute. Dominant hand on every floater. 1 foot runner or 2 foot floater — you need both at different times, so practice both. Go for makes or time.

  1. 1
Floater – Above the Right Block

Sprinter stance, no dribble — right foot in front of left foot. Take one step with the left foot, jump, and shoot with your dominant hand. Make sure you're not shooting a layup — shoot from the block or a little behind it. Lefties flip the footwork.

Floater – Middle of the Paint

Same as #1, just in the middle of the paint. Sprinter stance, no dribble — right foot in front of left foot. One step with the left foot, jump, and shoot with your dominant hand. Floater, not a layup. Lefties flip the footwork.

  3. 3
Floater – Above the Left Block

Sprinter stance, no dribble — right foot in front of left foot. Take one step with the left foot, jump, and shoot with your dominant hand — same footwork, still shooting right hand on this side. Lefties flip the footwork and shoot left hand. Make sure you're not shooting a layup — shoot from the block or a little behind it.

  4. 4
    1 Hard Dribble Floater – 3 Spots

1 hard dribble into right-left footwork into a floater. 3 spots: (1) above the right block at 10 feet (2) middle, right inside the foul line (3) left block.

  5. 5
    5 Spot Floaters

5 spots at 8–10 feet: baseline, wing, middle, wing, baseline. 2 pound dribbles into right-left footwork if you're a righty, left-right if you're a lefty, into a floater. Shoot with your dominant hand.

  6. 6
    Around the Cone Floaters

Place cone at elbow/wing/baseline. Dribble around cone, one dribble, shoot a 1 foot runner or 2 foot floater. Move cone around court. Adds dribbling pattern and change of direction. All floaters with your dominant hand. 30 seconds — go right hand dribble and left hand dribble.

Coaching Cues
  • Soft touch, high arc
  • One foot or two, stay balanced
  • Push it, don't shoot it

Chair or cone on the wing at the 3-point line, top of key, and other wing. 2 hard dribbles into a single move — hesitation, in and out, crossover, between the legs, behind the back, or spin — then a 1 dribble 1 foot runner or 2 foot floater. Make 10–20 floaters at all 3 spots.

  4. 4
Triple Threat Floaters – 5 Spots

  5. 5
    The Pivot Series – Floaters

Spin the ball out 15–20 feet from the basket. Land on two feet. Pivot: inside pivot, outside pivot, strong side pivot over the strong side shoulder, or weak side pivot over the weak side shoulder. Rip and go into a 1 dribble floater.

  6. 6
Floaters off Screens – Down Screens, Flares & Reads

Work both wings and the middle of the floor — 3 areas, both sides. (1) Down Screen — cone above the block. Curl it, catch, and attack with a 1 dribble floater. (2) Flare Screen — start at the slot, cone on the wing. Sprint off the flare, catch, and attack with a 1 dribble floater. (3) Pin Down Reads — chair or cone just above the block. Set up your cut first — walk your defender toward the basket — then come off 3 ways: curl, straight cut, or fade, and attack into a floater. Inside foot plants first, hands ready before the catch. Walk the cut first, then go game speed. 1 foot runners or 2 foot floaters. Go 1 minute working on 1 screen, or go for makes.

Finish with a 1 foot runner or 2 foot floater. Track makes.

Coaching Cues
  • Eyes on the rim
  • One motion, ball on your shoulder
  • Hold your follow through
  1. 1
    Form Shooting – 1 Hand, 3 Spots

Very in close, right next to the hoop. 3 spots: baseline, middle, other baseline. Make 5 at each of the 3 spots. One hand only. BEEF: Balance, Eyes, Elbow, Follow Through. Feet shoulder-width apart, toes pointed to 11 o'clock, which naturally drops the elbow under the ball. Elbow directly under the ball, hand flat, ball on fingertips. Bring it up to your right shoulder. Eyes on the rim. Push straight up through your legs. Do not fade or lean. Follow through with full extension of the elbow, like you're putting your hand in the basket, and hold it. Distance doesn't matter — form is the most important part. Once your form is locked in, the ball can only miss long or short.

  2. 2

On the hop: ball in the air, feet in the air — land on 2 feet at the same time, right foot slightly in front of the left if you're a righty (left slightly in front if you're a lefty), toes pointed to 11 o'clock. Rise up on your toes. Don't jump.

Shooting on the Move

Catch-and-shoot, screens, and transition shooting at every level.

Coaching Cues
  • Hands ready on every catch
  • Focus on footwork and catch in rhythm
  • Move at game speed

Spin the ball out with backspin. No passer? Spin the ball out and run through it, or put the ball on a chair and snatch it.

  1. 1
    Relocation & Drift Shooting

No partner needed. Start in the corner. Spin the ball out with backspin toward the wing like a teammate's pass, sprint and chase it down, then catch with a jump stop or a 1,2 step — swivel hips, plant inside foot, feet squared to the rim — and shoot. Rebound, spin the ball out with backspin toward the next spot (top of key, other wing, other corner) and relocate again. Stay low while you move, show your hands early, and go straight up and down on the shot. Go in close, mid-range, 3s, or NBA 3s. Go for 1 minute or go for makes.

  2. 2
    Sprint Aways & Sprint Backs – 2s and 3s

Work with a passer — no passer, spin the ball out and run through it, or snatch it off a chair. (1) Sprint Away — start at the elbow, sprint away from the passer to the corner, swivel hips, plant inside foot, catch and shoot. (2) Sprint Back — sprint back toward the passer to the elbow, swivel hips, plant inside foot, catch and shoot. Keep going back and forth. Work both sides — right elbow to right corner, then left elbow to left corner. Go 1 minute a spot. Track makes out of shots.

  3. 3
    Transition Shooting – 2s or 3s

Touch halfcourt with your foot, turn and sprint into your designated spot — foul line, elbow, wing, or baseline corner. Catch the pass in stride (no passer — put the ball on a chair at the spot and snatch it), plant inside foot, and shoot immediately — 2s or 3s. As soon as you shoot, turn and sprint back to halfcourt, touch it with your foot, turn and sprint back into the same spot and go again. Keep going — halfcourt and back, every rep. Stay at one spot until you hit your number, then move to the next.

  4. 4
    V-Cut & L-Cut Shooting

    (1) V-Cut — start on the wing, walk your defender toward the basket, plant your outside foot, and pop back out to the wing. Catch and shoot. (2) L-Cut — start on the block, walk up the lane line to the elbow, then cut flat out to the wing. Catch and shoot. Hands ready as you pop out, square up on the catch. Work both sides. Mid-range and 3s. Make 5–10 each way.

  5. 5
    Figure 8 Shooting

Place 2 cones. 3 areas to set them: right wing, middle, left wing. Start in close. Sprint under and around the first cone, come into the middle, catch and shoot — plant inside foot first, hands up as the target before the catch. Sprint down and around the other cone, come back into the middle, catch and shoot again. Inside foot plants first on both sides. Figure 8 pattern. Start in tight (6–10 feet), then progress out to mid-range and 3-point range. You can also reverse it — run through the middle and keep the same footwork. Go for 1 minute or make a certain number.

  6. 6
Shooting off Screens – Down Screen & Flare

One screen, one read. Work both wings and the middle of the floor — 3 areas, both sides. (1) Down Screen — cone above the block. Start on one side, run to the other in a 1,2 step, curl it, swivel the hips, plant, be balanced and square to the basket, and shoot immediately. (2) Flare Screen — start at the slot, cone on the wing. Sprint off the flare, catch in stride and shoot immediately. Inside foot plants first, hands ready before the catch. Walk the cut first, then go game speed. Start the cone in close at 12 feet and work out to mid-range. Go 1 minute working on 1 screen, or go for makes.

Set up your cut first — walk your defender toward the basket — then come off 3 ways: curl, straight cut, or fade. (2) Flare Screen — start at the slot, cone on the wing.

  4. 4
    3-Point Line Shooting – 7 Spots

Go 7 in a row — one make at each spot. Start in the corner and make it. Sprint along the 3-point line to the other corner and make it. Sprint back to the first wing and make it, then back across to the other wing and make it. Then the slot, sprint to the other slot, and finish at the top of the key. Miss and you start over — if you miss at the 3rd spot, go back to the first corner. Get all 7 in a row in 3 minutes or less.

  5. 5
Zipper Cut Shooting – 6 Spots

6 spots — a chair at the baseline, the wing, and the elbow on both sides. Start on the block, sprint past the chair, catch and shoot. At the elbows, sprint straight up the lane line past the chair to the top of the key. Hands ready as you come off the chair, square up on the catch. Work all 6 spots. In tight, mid-range, 3s, or NBA 3s. Go for 1 minute or go for makes.

  6. 6
Shooting off Screens – Wide Pin Downs & Staggers

More space, more screens. Work both wings and the middle of the floor. (1) Pin Down — curl, straight cut, or fade. (2) Wide Pin Down — same as the pin down, but the chair or cone is set wider on the floor, out toward the wing, so you have more room coming off it. (3) Stagger Screens — two chairs in a row. Come off 3 ways: curl, straight cut, or reject (go away from the screens). (4) Back to Back — come off a pin down, then right into a flare. Set up every cut, square up on the catch. 3s and NBA 3s. Go 1 minute working on 1 screen, or go for makes.

Coaching Cues
  • Hands ready on every catch
  • Focus on footwork and catch in rhythm
  • Move at game speed

Shoot every drill in tight, mid-range, 3s, or NBA 3s. Every drill can progress out to NBA range. Pro challenge: can you make 5 or 10 in a row?

  3. 3
    Transition Shooting – 2s and 3s

Touch halfcourt with your foot, turn and sprint into your designated spot. 5 spots: right corner, right wing, top of key, left wing, left corner. Catch the pass in stride (no passer — put the ball on a chair at the spot and snatch it), plant inside foot, and shoot immediately — 2s and 3s. As soon as you shoot, turn and sprint back to halfcourt, touch it with your foot, turn and sprint back into the same spot and go again. Keep going — halfcourt and back, every rep. Go for 1, 2, or 3 minutes straight, or pick a certain number of makes.

Pro challenge: add a shot fake before every shot.

  6. 6
Shooting off Screens – Game Reads

Every screen from Advanced — pin down, wide pin down, flare, and staggers (curl, straight cut, or reject) — plus: (1) Floppy — start under the rim with a chair on each block. Pick a side, sprint off that screen to the wing or corner, catch and shoot. (2) Elevator Screens — two chairs side by side about a step apart. Sprint through the gap, catch and shoot. (3) Screen & Pop — set a screen on a chair, then pop out to the 3 for the catch. Partner calls the read so you react instead of knowing ahead of time. NBA 3s. Make 5 or 10 in a row.

Chair or cone as the screener on the wing, the top of the key, and the other wing — regular ball screens. Read it 5 ways: use it into a 1 dribble pull-up, reject it and pull up going the other way, snake it (dribble at the screen like you're using it, then curl back the way you came instead of going through), split it (attack the gap between the screener and your defender), or skid the curb — if the defender goes under, pop back behind the screen and shoot it.
